Kutaki (Picrorhiza kurroa Royle)
The bitter rhizomes of picrorhiza have been used for thousands of years in India to treat people with indigestion. It is also used to treat people with constipation due to insufficient digestive secretion and for fever due to all manner of infections. The major constituents in picrorhiza are the glycosides picroside I, kutkoside, androsin, and apocynin. Picrorhiza increases bile production in the liver, according to rat studies. It has also been shown to protect animals from damage by several potent liver toxins, offering protection as good as or better than silymarin Human studies on this plant are quite prolific. A series of cases of acute viral hepatitis in India were reportedly treated successfully by a combination of picrorhiza with a variety of minerals.
Bhui Amla (Andrographis panniculata)
Infective hepatitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the liver. It is often followed by liver cirrhosis and may progress to a coma and death. In India, where ancient physicians used AP(Andrographis panniculata) to treat similar liver ailments, a study was conducted to evaluate the effect of AP in infective hepatitis. There was marked improvement in the majority of patients tested, when given a decoction or infusion of AP. Appetite improved on the fifth day of treatment, jaundice (yellow color of conjunctive of the eye and skin) gradually diminished and completely disappeared within 24 days.
Gulvel (Cocculus cordifolius)
The stem is bitter, alternative, aphrodisiac, hepatic stimulant, antiperiodic, mild diuretic and demulcent. The extract of stem is largely used as valuable nutrient, seminal weakness minor effections and general debility
Adulsa (Adhatoda vasica)
The leaf extract has been used for the treatment of ulcers for many centuries. It is also prescribed commonly for bleeding due to idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, local bleeding due to peptic ulcer, piles, etc.
Aloevera (Aloe indica)
Aloe is a perennial succulent native to East and South Africa. It is cultivated in the West Indies and other tropical countries. The tissue in the center of the aloe leaf contains a gel which yields aloe gel or aloe vera gel. Aloe vera is also taken internally for stomach disorders. Dried aloe latex, a substance derived from the leaf, is a strong laxative.
